before you write another chapter (read this)

A quick confession.

For years, I wrote very beautiful scenes where nothing actually happened.

The sentences were fine. The atmosphere was fine. The characters were technically interesting. But no one was under pressure, and the story didn’t move.

The shift came when I stopped asking, “Is this good?” and started asking, “Where is the tension?”

That question changes everything.

Strong stories start with tension

Flat writing usually comes from polite characters and safe choices. When everyone behaves reasonably, nothing moves.

Today’s focus is pressure.

Craft Insight

Conflict becomes compelling when something important is at risk, and the character cannot escape it without consequence. Tension grows when the character wants something, and someone or something actively resists them.

Build friction. Everything else follows.

📝 Prompt 1: Start Mid-Argument

Write a scene halfway through an argument. Do not explain how it began.

Let tone, subtext, and interruption reveal the deeper issue.

Doing so sharpens immediacy and forces you to trust the reader.

📝 Prompt 2: The Wrong Object

Give your character an object they should not have.

Write the moment someone notices. Focus on reaction before explanation.

Taking this approach quickly builds curiosity and conflict.

📝 Prompt 3: The Brutal Truth

Write one paragraph where your character admits something they would never normally say aloud.

Do not tidy it. Let it sit unresolved.

Exploring secrets out loud deepens the voice and emotional authenticity.

Reflection

Where in your current project are you protecting your characters from discomfort?

That is often where the story wants to grow.
